For Henry II, the Great Tower was a dazzling showpiece built to impress and entertain his most important guests. Some of these guests were Pilgrims, arriving to see the tomb of St Thomas Becket at Canterbury Cathedral. After the death of Becket news had spread far and wide that this was a place where miracles came true, so many nobles and 'celebrities' of the day travelled to Canterbury, stopping off on-route at Dover Castle in Kent.
